Today, after church service we went to Jalan Lahat (Falim) looking for my favourite Assam Laksa stall. I love assam laksa and I am crazy for assam laksa. I remembered telling my friends when we were visiting Penang for a day trip that I must get to taste my assam laksa before we leave for home or else the trip will not be complete for me. Thanks to my obliging friends, I did get to taste Penang assam laksa and left Penang with my taste buds fully satisfied.
In Ipoh, we can easily find assam laksa but sadly, it is not easy to get tasty, yummy assam laksa. I do not know about others, but for me the closest to Penang assam laksa is found here in Jalan Lahat (Falim), Ipoh. Maybe there are other better assam laksa elsewhere in Ipoh that I have not tasted before. So if there is, do please let me know and I will go check it out and get to taste it.
From far, my eyes were looking out for the familiar hawker umbrellas at the front of the first shop of the row of shops on the right hand side of the road. On the left is the on-going new Tin City building project. We reached the stall at about 1.10 pm and almost all the tables were taken up by customers.
This hawker stall is only opens on Sundays. If we missed it, we have to wait till the next Sunday. The food is prepared in the kitchen behind the first shop.
How to order our food? First, we have to get the bowl from inside the red pail on the ground. Pick whatever additional ingredients or side orders that we want. Then hand the bowl of ingredients to the hawker and inform her the number of bowls of assam laksa we want. After giving our orders, we are to wait at our table for the food to be served. We are to pay when the food is served.
The tables are placed along the front and side of the shop. There is no fan and in the mid-day heat like today, I was sweating profusely as I ate my piping hot assam laksa.
What is assam laksa? Briefly, this addictive, mouth-watering assam laksa is a spicy, sour, slightly sweet fish base soup with thick rice (laksa) noodle. The soup base is boiled with water used to poached the fish (usually mackerel), shredded fish flakes, lemon grass, galangal, chili, special laksa leaves, etc. The bowl of assam laksa is garnished with finely sliced raw ingredients etc. onions, cucumber, red chili, lettuce, pineapple, torch ginger, mint leaves, etc. Finally, it is served with a spoonful of thick, prawn paste.
Parking is available along the main road in front of the row of shops or along the side road of Jalan Foo Nyit Tze.
"HAPPY EASTER"
Likewise, teach the older women to be reverent
in the way they live, not to be slanderers
or addicted to much wine, but to teach what is good.
Then they can train the younger women to love their husbands
and children, to be self-controlled and pure,
to be busy at home, to be kind, and to be subject to their husbands,
so that no-one will malign the word of God.
(Titus 2:3-5, New International Version-NIV)
I love the poem. The street looks interesting
