The Odean cinema at Jalan Sultan Idris Shah (formerly named Brewster Road).
Currently the old Odean cinema building is used as a multi-purpose centre (food and shopping premise)
This old Capitol cinema building has been demolished to give way for a new building block. This photo was taken in 1937.
This funny looking building was the former Grand cinema.
Location: Where Jalan Yang Kalsom meets Jalan Sultan Idris Shah, Ipoh.

The Ruby cinema has been converted to a Furniture Centre.
The old Lido cinema at Jalan Dato' Onn Jaafar (former Brewster Road).
The old Lido cinema building was later used as a restaurant. Recently a new business has taken over the building.
The old Cathay cinema at Jalan Dato' Onn Jaafar (former Cockman street). At that time the surrounding area was not fully developed yet and the road with hardly any traffic except for the few cyclists.
The current road with heavy traffic and surrounding area fully developed.
It has now been converted to a shopping premise.
These are just a few of the old cinema buildings in Ipoh.

Most cinemas here all gone. No more standing.

DeleteOrdean, Capital, Lido, Cathay cinemas, sounds familiar. Yes, in Kuching too. Ordean & Capital already demolished. Cathay turns into a coffee shop & Lido becomes a pub if I am not wrong. Always nice to flash back memories of now & then.

DeleteThanks Nancy for going around to take the photos of what the old cinemas have turned into. It is like this in KL too, all the all standalone cinemas have been turned into something else and we only get cinemas in malls now.

DeleteIn my city they have most theatres out in the suburban areas. The downtown core doesn't actually have a first run theatre anymore, which I think is going to be a mistake in the long run.

DeleteNancy, that was very nostalgic, I used to enjoy going to the cinema. Now, most if not all old cinemas are already long gone.

DeleteThis was my time! Err I think the one I used to go to is now the funny looking building. The one near Super Kinta. Can't remember my street names now.

ReplyDeleteMost of the old cinemas here were demolished. A few retained the names but were given face-lift and turned into cineplex, mostly inside shopping malls.
Hi Karen, times have changed and the old has to make way for the new.

DeleteDear Nancy, thank you for putting up the pictures of the old cinemas. Alas the theatres are gone but the buildings remain. I remember watching Haathi Mere Sathi as a child at grand cinema and was enthralled by Ramu the elephant.
