Gopeng's Authentic Chicken Porridge.

On Wednesday, we missed our morning walk because we woke up late. We went for breakfast and upon reaching home, I remembered I need to pay a bill in Gopeng district. The counter in Gopeng is only open from Monday to Wednesday. On other days of the week, I will have to pay the bill in Kampar which is so much further than Gopeng. If I do not pay on Wednesday, then I will have to wait till next week to pay it.

I then remembered my friends and "whatsapp" them whether anyone of them were interested to join me and I will take them for Gopeng's authentic chicken porridge in the food court near the wet market. Immediately, I received their quick responses and it was my turn to pick them up and drove all the way to Gopeng. Upon reaching Gopeng, I went to settle my bill and drove to the market.
With a quick look around, I found this stall (M21). Its been a long time since I last ate this chicken porridge. It was the father's time and the son and daughter were assisting their father. Now the son and daughter has taken over and continued with the business. I was told to just mention the number of bowls of porridge and then sit down to wait for our turn.
I wonder why they designed this place with this pillar standing right in the centre, in front of the stall...
The locals know their way of going about their business. While we were waiting and seated right in front of the stall, my friends went to order the following noodles.
A bowl of Assam Laksa with some stuffed goodies.
They also ordered a bowl of rice noodles with fish balls and fried goodies.
This last bowl of beancurd and gingko sweet drink went to my friend. We ended up ordering some other drinks to quench our thirst.
Finally, it was our turn. The boss came to ask whether we wanted chicken and we promptly and in unison answered yes! This was a big plate of poached chicken, probably more than half a chicken! My friends commented that the chicken tasted like her mom's homemade chicken.
2 bowls of plain porridge to go with the chicken. The total cost of chicken and porridge came to RM15 (approx. 3.70 USD). If you are interested to try this porridge, make sure you are there by 11.30am. Within 2 hours plus, the chicken and porridge are all sold out. The business is open everyday and there is no off day.
After the porridge lunch, I took my friends for a short drive around Gopeng town.
This roundabout where the plants are, was the former place of the food court when I used to eat the chicken porridge and other noodles many years ago.
On our way back to Ipoh, we stopped at the Agro Mall just outside Gopeng town for a look around.
These are two of my foodie companions and they are fun to be with.
I also have other foodie companions especially my golden girls but they are very camera shy.

For Moses gave us only the Law with
its rigid demands and merciless justice,
while Jesus Christ brought us loving forgiveness as well.
No one has ever actually seen God, but, of course, his only Son has,
for he is the companion of the Father and has told us all about him.

  2. Now I am thinking of having chicken porridge. Haha. Aa I grow older, I appreciate simple plain porridge. Never a porridge person when I were a kid. Aa matter of fact, I hated porridge when I were young.

Nice food you have here. But indeed funny to have that pillar at centre of the kitchen.

    1. I have always love the Teochew plain porridge that goes with a variety of dishes. It is indeed strange about the pillar design.

    1. Annie, this porridge is very easy to copy. Poach the chicken and use the water for boiling porridge. Chop up the chicken and drizzle with some diluted soy sauce and a little bit of oil. Have a happy new week too!

  17. Hi Nancy, is this chicken and rice porridge? I'm not familiar with rice porridge as we have oat porridge which we eat for breakfast here in Canada. I wish restaurant food was so cheap here in Canada. It's so expensive to eat out.
    Have a Holy Week.
