I have 2 types of Spider Plants growing in my garden. Both plants started with plantlets obtained from my friends. Both are variegated plants. Its scientific name is Chlorophytum Comosum. Some of the common names are Spider Plants, Airplane Plant, Ribbon Plant, etc.
The leaves of this Spider Plant have green and white stripes.
The white in the center and green on both sides. The leaves are long and narrow.
Spider Plants are suitable for hanging pots. Plantlets will grow from the main plants and hang down.
Some of the plantlets will dry up after some time and need to be cut off.
This is another type of Spider plant. I received this plantlet from a church friend.
This one has broader leaves than the previous Spider plant showed above.
One day I noticed a shoot growing out from it.
This Spider Plant has green and yellow or white stripes on the leaves.
Spider Plants are very easy to grow and take care.
They grow well in well drained garden soil.
It is best kept from direct or full sunlight.
It is named Spider Plant because the plantlets look like spiders.
This is the mother plant. Most of the yellow stripes have changed to white stripes.
The yellow stripes can be seen on the plantlets.
Sometimes, the tips of the leaves will turn brown or black but will not harm the plants.
Some of the leaves have more yellow or white than the green.
I woke up this morning and found some leaves from the Croton plants blown to the ground. There was very strong wind and heavy rain last night.
Another lovely plant that grows outdoors here in SW Florida, but where we used to live in Oregon we could only grow them as houseplants.
ReplyDeleteI have one in the open under some plants and the other hanging under the porch.
Deletewe have several spider plants in our house and they just keep going and going
ReplyDeleteThe first spider plant has been with me for many years and it is still very healthy.
DeleteCroton and spider plants are houseplants here. From spider plants there is a green leaved version as well a curly leaved version - 'Bonnie'. Your plants look healthy & happy.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Riitta. I have seen the green leaved version but have yet to see the curly leaved version.
DeleteI love spider plants and I never could keep one alive. I just don't have your green thumb.
ReplyDeleteHave a fabulous day Nancy. ☺
Thank you, Sandee. Have a beautiful day!
DeleteI have the spider plant shown first in this post. They are good indoor plants to add oxygen to the air.
ReplyDeleteI will need to find a place if I want to place them inside my house.
DeleteYou are so good with plants, herbs and flowers, Nancy! Lovely photos.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. The Spider plants are very easy to grown. Very low maintenance.
DeleteI agree with you Nancy that spider plant is very easy to grow and it's a beautiful, carefree houseplant too! I used to grow them before but with a big garden space I now have to cut back on potted plants as I can't cope with everything. I admire how you care for your potted plants as they require a lot more care compared to plants planted directly on the ground. Happy gardening:)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Annie. I have cut down planting plants that needs lots of care, replacing them with edibles and easy to maintain plants. Have a beautiful day!
DeleteLovely post dear! Have a great week! xx

ReplyDeleteFrom one, you can grow many from the plantlets.
DeleteMy mother had a spider plant.
ReplyDeleteI was told spider plant is a air cleaner or freshener plant.
DeleteNature sure is beautiful!
ReplyDeleteThank you, dear. Have a great day!
DeleteMy mum has few pots of these spider plants. Could be messy and "bushy" of did not trim. Haha.
ReplyDeleteThey do need some trimming away of the plantlets when they get too bushy or untidy.
DeleteI like spider plants as well, they grow easily for me. Yours are looking very healthy!

DeleteI love this plant, Nancy. It's beautiful. I have one. At least I think I have one! I have yet to see a single plantlet sprout out of mine. Now I have doubts about what I'm actually planting..lol! :P
ReplyDeleteHi Sharon, I have another plant that looks like Spider Plants but it does not has any plantlets. Could be we are having the same plant.
DeleteWow never seen a spider plant flower stalk before! So pretty... like a spray of orchid.
ReplyDeleteThe 2nd spider plant's plantlet is more prettier because of the broader stripes on the leaves. They do look like orchids.
DeleteWish i had green finger, then i can plant my own plants...
ReplyDeleteMaybe you can start with this Spider plant which is not a fussy plant.
DeleteI like indoor plants that are easy to grow and develop plantlets. That second type of spider plant is one I've never come across. Exciting to see a new shoot with flowers.
ReplyDeleteI too love the 2nd Spider plants. There are now 2 plantlets on the plant.
