Home Cooked Bak Kut Teh (Pork Herbal Soup)

A friend told me about this "herbal tea" for boiling pork herbal soup (bak kut teh) which can be bought from the shop which I used to frequent. According to my friend, this herbal tea tastes better than those branded herbal tea. After hearing from my friend, I approached the counter and asked for bak kut teh or herbal tea.
The lady at the counter took a packet that was hanging over the counter and gave it to me. The herbal tea costs only RM10.
For 1 packet of herbal tea, I used 2 strips of pork belly and 1 pig's stomach to boil the soup. I also added some dried Shiitake mushrooms, some red dates, gojiberries and a few slices of "tong kwai" for extra flavour. I cooked enough for 2 meals and also to give to my friend and neighbour.

Lunch
I blanched some fried tofu puffs to add to the soup.
We had "bak kut teh" with steamed rice for lunch.

Dinner
For dinner, we had "bak kut teh" with noodle.
Spicy sambal belacan with lime juice as condiment.
Fragrant Jasmine flowers from my garden.

  1. Looks good. Wah, you even cook pork stomach. Was it already cleaned or you need to scrub the stomach with salt and preboil it to get rid of any untoward smell before using it to boil the bkt?

    1. I used to clean the stomach but now my pork seller cleans it for us. I only need to check that all is cleaned, rinse and blanch it in hot water before I cook it.

  2. So how do you like the bkt soup taste? Is it those light light sweet taste without heavy dong guai taste? I am ok with almost all bkt soup taste as long as they are not overly salty and overly sweet.
