Bananas & Cauliflower In My Garden

In an earlier post, I mentioned how my potted banana tree has started to bear fruit. That was about a month ago.

I wanted to plant a banana tree for the leaves for cooking purposes. As the tree grows taller, the leaves were beyond my reach and I was thinking of cutting down the tree. Before I could actually cut it down, I noticed it has started to bear fruit. What a pleasant surprise and I was overjoyed.
Here you can see the small green bananas.
It actually has 3 combs of bananas on the stalk.
There is one big comb and 2 smaller combs of bananas.
Every morning I check on the bananas. I don't know how long they will take to ripen.
Every banana tree will bear fruit only once.
Before these bananas ripen, the mother plant has already sent forth 2 small shoots coming out from the soil. I will be getting 2 new banana plants to replace this one.
A cauliflower seedling in a pot in my garden.
Cauliflower plant growing in another pot.
I am eagerly looking forward to see sign of a cauliflower.
My home grown cauliflower, harvested a few months earlier.
It is very encouraging to see the plants growing well and getting to harvest my garden's produce.

Even in old age they will still produce fruit
and be vital and green.

  3. The colors are wonderful, too. Sometime I would love to see a shot of your entire garden, so we can see how big it is and how much room it takes up.

  5. Hello Nancy:=) It's hard to believe you can grow a banana plant in a plant pot, How exiting that is bearing fruit now, and you will have two new plants. It's equally unbelievable that you can grow a cauliflower!! You must have green fingers Nancy.

  9. Is your cauliflower nicer than the imported ones at the market? I loved the cauliflower in the UK, just boil, add a pinch of salt and eat. So sweet, so fragrant. Maybe because theirs was so fresh...not the ones at the market here. I am not fond of it, so bland, seldom buy.

    1. It is nice if I do not wait too long to harvest. Due to lack of experience, the first one was harvested too late and it was hard and have to cook a long time to soften. The next two were very nice.

  16. Nancy, we are surely happy to see the plants we have cared for grow.
I tell you, in case you don't know, that many people do not cook cauliflower because of the bad smell they give off at that time. One trick to prevent that from happening is to boil them with the saucepan uncovered. You will see that it is a great tip !! ..

  17. Very interesting. My neighbors have banana trees in their yard as well as jackfruit trees and they give us fruits from their bounty. I like your cauliflower, which looks ready for steaming.

  18. It must be very satisfying to watch them grow and fruit. It is amazing that the banana tree can grow so well and fruit in a pot. How long does it take to grow until the cauliflower appears?
