Day 1.
On Monday, we planned to go for some jelly desserts but found out that it was their rest day. And at the last minute, one of our foodie friend was held up by a visitor to her house and she could not join us on this foodie adventure.
So the two of us ended up at a place we didn't planned for. My foodie friend who brought me here knows the boss and his wife of this eatery, Restoran Chong Kok Wah Tou Guan.

So the two of us ended up at a place we didn't planned for. My foodie friend who brought me here knows the boss and his wife of this eatery, Restoran Chong Kok Wah Tou Guan.
As we walked into the shop, right in front of us were trays of black jelly,
called Gui Ling Gao, direct translation is Tortoise Jelly or Turtle Jelly.
Traditionally, this jelly was made from the bottom shell of a type of turtle together with a variety of herbal products.
But the present day jelly powder sold commercially does not contain the turtle shells but has the same herbal products, and are taken as medicine for skin complexion, as well as a herbal dessert.
My friend ordered the Gui Ling Gao. It has a slight bitter taste and sugar syrup can be added from the container with the red cover. Amount of sugar syrup added according to one's preference.
I ordered this sweet dessert - chilled water chestnut with corn.
On this side were listed all the food items available for the day.
They were all written in Chinese, my friend had to translate them for me.
We ordered Savoury Yam Rice (my favourite) to share.
Very, very flavourful and delicious.
Menu for most of the food items are displayed on the wall.

Taman Desa Kenchana, Bercham.
Day 2.
The next day, the three of us were able to meet up and we went to JellyBar for coconut desserts in Bercham. I will be putting up the post on JellyBar at a later date. From JellyBar, we went back to this same place to introduce this place to our friend who was not with us the previous day.
This time we ordered a few variety of desserts to share.
On the left is the Chrysanthemum and Goji berry jelly.
On the right is the Lou Han Guo jelly.
A piece of Water Chestnut agar-agar or jelly to share.
The lady boss preparing our main dishes of rice and noodles.
My friend's Lam Yee Pai Kuat rice with cucumber slices.
(Pork rib stewed with red fermented bean curd)
Another friend ordered the Savoury Yam Rice.
Definitely worth going back for this flavourful and delicious yam rice.
And here's my order - Kat Chai Kai mein or Calamansi Chicken Noodle.
It is sourish, a bit spicy and a bit sweet and very appetizing!
After eating this whole plate of noodle, I felt like I have not eaten at all!
So do not be attracted by strange, new ideas.
Your spiritual strength comes as a gift from God,
not from ceremonial rules about eating certain foods -
a method which, by the way, hasn't helped those who have tried it!
(Hebrews 13:9, TLB)
Wow, some very exotic (to me) dishes here. I find the Chinese people have so many dishes that I would never get to sample the vast majority of them though am fortunate here to have a lot of Chinese and other Asian restaurants. The Savoury Yam Rice and the noodle dish you ate seem appealing. I'm not sure the jelly dishes would appeal to me. I never did eat jello here either. I don't really like the texture though I think a savoury jelly might be nice.
ReplyDeleteOver here we have endless varieties of Chinese as well as Asian food from restaurants and side stalls to choose from. And we also have lots and lots of sweet jello to choose from too.

ReplyDeleteIrene, I have been wanting to make gui ling gao myself too but until now did not buy the powder yet. We are yam fans.

Thank you, Tanya. There are many more varieties of desserts we have over here.
DeleteThe desserts are quite different from what I'm used to!
ReplyDeleteThese are Asian desserts and they are very different from your side.
DeleteI want to try the Water Chestnut agar-agar and your Kat Chai Kai Mein because I like sourish food. LOL at your statement that eat is same as no eat, means the Kat Chai Kai Mein is too little for you?
ReplyDeleteLol, no, the noodle is not too little for me. What I mean was the noodles has this sourish taste that does not make me feel satiated. It sort of increases my appetite!
DeleteTurtle jelly? Really? I'll stick with strawberry or grape, thank you!
ReplyDeleteLol! Tom, this is just herbal jelly, so called turtle jelly. Nowadays, they do not contain any turtle shells powder. If there is turtle shells powder, I too won't want to eat it.
DeleteI'm a dessert person. Yum!
ReplyDeleteMe too! I love desserts too!
DeleteKat chai kai? Hmm sounds like a dish I can make once my kat chai plant cooperates. :)
ReplyDeleteStacy, I think it will be a yummy dish to cook on your own. Very appetizing and I love it.
