Birds (Zebra Doves) And Insects

For the past few days I spotted this bird in front of my neighbour's house. By the time I took out my mobile phone or when I tried to go nearer to get a clearer focus, it flew away. When I tried to zoom to the maximum, the picture do not turn out well. These are the best I can get.
Sometimes it was alone, sometimes it has 2 or 3 other birds for company.

It always appeared about the same time.
I googled and it looks very much like the Zebra Dove.
Please correct me if I am wrong about the identification.

Sometimes it will be over at my neighbour's front, sometimes it will move over to our side.

Took a snapshot of this insect on the spadix of my Peace Lily flower.

On another flower, there were more insects at the base of the spadix.

This was the first time I noticed insects on my Peace Lily flowers.
I wondered what drew these insects to the flower especially the spadix.

Linking to Saturday's Critters.

  1. We have lots of Mourning Doves that nest around our house in the hedges and they stay year round. I love their cooing sounds. I'm sure there are many kinds of doves.
Could there be some nectar on the spadix. I have a small Peace Lilly in my house but I never saw any insects. I'm not always watering it on time and it's rather neglected but is surviving.

    Have a lovely weekend.

    1. Hello Julia. I like these doves because they look so gentle and I too love their cooing sounds. Maybe there is some nectar on the spadix. Have a lovely weekend too!

  2. Doves are such sweet looking birds. At first I thought they were bees or wasps but they actually look more like some type of fly. We had Peace Lillies in the garden at our last house & they sure are beautiful. Good work getting the close up of the insects. I must try to get some insect photos. Trying to capture them keeping still must be tricky. We get lots of Bumble Bees in Summer but they don't stay in one spot for long.

    1. Not sure what they are called but I think they are some kind of fruit-flies. They make my chillies and papayas go bad by using their stinger to inject their eggs into them.

Macro/close-up photography is not easy with insects. Lots of patience is required. I think the best time is early mornings when it is still cold and they are still sluggish.

    3. Surprisingly these insects didn't fly away when I went near to snap the photos.Probably they are too busy with the nectar.

  5. Those are Zebra Doves alright. I have them around my home too.

From my experience, with my 5x zoom compact camera, I need to be about 10 feet away from the bird in order to get decent shots. Only way to do this is to sneak up on them unfortunately.

    1. Thank you, Chuah for confirming the id of the birds. I only have my mobile phone camera and it can be very disappointing when trying to take snapshots of birds. Ha ha by the time we sneak up on them, they will fly off! Have a wonderful weekend!

    2. You could also try snapping pictures of them from your house or car window. Sometimes, they wander close enough when luck is on your side. Well, it has happened to me before.

  20. Pretty zebra doves! Those flies are probably pollinators for the Peace Lily. Coincidentally, I have a fly (hoverfly) on a flower, too.
