Delicious Assam Laksa At Air Itam, Penang.

The 2nd day of the church family camp was a Sunday. We had a few hours of free time and we used it drive to Air Itam for the famous Assam Laksa. The last time I had eaten this assam laksa was many years ago.

I know there are many places in Penang selling delicious assam laksa. All I know or can remember is that I have tasted this famous assam laksa and I love it. Thanks to our friends who are willing to go with me even though it was a very hot and humid afternoon. As usual, the place was very crowded.
Here is the famous Air Itam Assam Laksa stall. We had to stand and wait behind seated customers to secure a table for 4 people. This is not a place for those who are particular with the cleanliness of the surrounding and wanting to eat in comfort.
From those old days until now, they are still enjoying a roaring business.
Their customers consist of locals and foreigners.
Once we secured a table, we ordered 4 bowls of assam laksa and 4 glasses of sugarcane water from the nearby stall selling drinks.
A worn out sticker on the table. "The One And The Only One Air Itam Laksa."
Service was fast and in a short while, 4 bowls of yummy-licious laksa were brought to our table.
The smell of the laksa activated my salivary glands and I almost forgot to take snapshots in my eagerness to tuck in the laksa!
White rice noodle in spicy, sweet and sourish fish base soup.
Love the abundance of  blended fish meat in the soup.
The black sauce is the prawn paste (hae ko in Hokkien).
I mixed the prawn paste or hae ko into the soup and I was ready to tuck in. I even finished up the soup. My friends nodded in approved after tasting the laksa. Finally, my desire for assam laksa has been fulfilled!

The Lord is fair in everything he does and full of kindness.
He is close to all who call on him sincerely.
He fulfills the desires of those who reverence and trust him;
he hears their cries for help and rescues them.

  12. I had laksa when I was in Malaysia a few years ago, bit it didn't look quite like the one you show. It was very tasty, however. In fact every single dish I ate there was always terrific and sometimes we ate in places like the ones you feature, crowded and noisy, but with terrific, inexpensive food.

    1. Hi David, there is the curry laksa, Siamese laksa and assam laksa. You could have tasted one of these. Sometimes the best food is found in this noisy and crowded places.

  13. Reminds me of a place in LA. It's basically an alleyway mercado filled with food vendors. Looks unsanitary but the food smells amazing.

  14. I finally went to Google and read what Laksa is! Because this is not a dish we have here. It looks so good, just my thing!! I love both soup and noodles! Looks like it simmers a long time to get a deep flavor. This place seems to be known to the locals as the best! Is so good that they do not need the fancy decorations or things.

  18. I'm sorry Nancy, being a Canadian could you please explain to me what the heck is assam laksa? Everytime you write about one of these unusual dishes that I see and their names I feel like I'm bad because I have to always ask you. Sorry abut that.
Have a great day. See ya.

    1. Hi Paul, I will try my best to explain. And please do not feel bad about it. Asam laksa is a sour, fish and tamarind-based soup. The main ingredients include shredded poached fish normally small mackerel, and finely sliced vegetables including cucumber, onions, red chillies, pineapple, lettuce, common mint, Vietnamese mint or laksa mint and pink torch ginger. It is normally served with thick rice noodles and topped off with a thick sweet prawn/shrimp paste. I hope by now you have a better idea or are you getting more confused? I hope not. Lol!

  21. I'm salivating just looking at your pictures! Thinking of the sourish assam laksa... mmmm. I'm not too bothered about cleanliness, preferring to assume that germs will be killed by the heat of the food. But I do hate having to depend on luck for a table.

    1. There are certain places we can't avoid waiting for tables. But here, the people are very considerate, once they finished eating they get up to give place for other customers.
