It is good to be back again. What a relief to have a new roof fixed over our dining room and the internet cable restored again. Those were stressful and sleepless 10 whole days for me.
The weather has been hot for the past few weeks and there was bad haze in most major towns and cities. 17th April afternoon, I took my bath after I had lunch and was resting in the living room. The sky started to darken and rain started to fall. I was thinking to myself that the rain will wash away some of the haze and the weather will be cooler. But then, the wind started to get very strong and heavy rain was pouring. One of our neighbours mentioned that the wind was like crazy, coming from many directions. A few minutes later, there was a loud noise which I couldn't describe and we found out that our dining room roof was totally blown off. The dining room was in a total mess with fallen broken bricks and small pieces of concrete and dirt! We had to wait for the rain to stop before we can try to clean up the mess as best as we could.

Our dining room used to be an air well. We had a roof fixed over it and turned it into our dining room. This photo shows the outside of the air well. When the roof was blown off, some of the broken bricks fell into our dining hall. I am thankful I was sitting at the dining table at that time when the roof was blown off.

We have to move everything away from the dining room. Those days when we don't have a roof over the dining room, the mornings were sunny but the afternoon was dark, with strong wind and heavy rain. We had to be on the standby to sweep the rain water from entering other rooms in the house.

There was a delay in getting the right contractor with the right price which we and our neighbours could agree upon because our roof is joined in one piece and we shared the cost for fixing the roof. The concreting work to repair the missing bricks and concrete for both houses costs RM1k.

This is the row of houses behind our house. Our blown off roof landed on their roofs and damaged their roofs. That 17th evening when the storm happened, the local authorities came to visit some of the victims of the storm. We were told to make individual reports and each household affected was paid RM200. They also offer to fix our roofs for free. But hubby and our neighbour prefer to get our own contractors to fix a more stronger and permanent one.

Finally, after waiting for more than a week, the workers started their work on our roof. The concreting work took 3 days. The fixing of the roof took about 4 days and hubby was glad that they did a good job. The roof job costs RM8k for both houses. So, in total, hubby paid RM5k to fix the roof.
When the roof was blown off, it must have cut off or snap our internet line. The cost for a new cable costs RM120. We have to wait for the roof to be completed before installing the internet cable. Finally after 10 whole days, we get back our internet service.

The days while the work was going on, it rained every afternoon. Thinking back, we have never had such experience as the one we experienced because of the storm.

The day when they finally covered up our dining room, we were really relieved. I can sleep without worrying about rain pouring down our dining room.
#8
While work was going, we closed the kitchen because it was not convenient to cook.

This is our new ceiling for our dining room.

Looks so much cleaner, nicer and definitely much cooler too.

Our new roof with almost 90% finished. With the long weekend holidays, the workers will return to touch up the remaining unfinished work tomorrow (Tuesday, 2nd May).
Looking back, no matter how difficult and challenging it was, God has given us strength to pull through and we came out victorious. All glory to God!
My health fails; my spirits droop, yet God remains!
He is the strength of my heart; he is mine forever!

See, God has come to save me!
I will trust and not be afraid,
for the Lord is my strength and song;
he is my salvation.

I dread having things like this happening to me. That is why I never get my house renovated, just close one eye and try to get by. Glad all's coming together well for you, pray you are coping beautifully in every way. God bless.
ReplyDeleteEveryone dreads such things but once it happened we just have to endure and bear with it until things are sorted out and repaired. God bless you too.
DeleteWow, how terrible about the storm blowing off your roof. I can imagine how worried you would be. Glad it is now fixed and you have internet again.
ReplyDeleteThe mural is so cute and all 3 dogs trying to peep through. Thanks for participating in Monday Murals Nancy.
Thank you, Sami for hosting.
Delete...stress is something that you don't need. Take care and be well.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tom. True, stress causes me many sleepless nights.

DeleteI am so sorry to hear about your roof, what an awful thing to happen. But I am thankful that you were not hurt. I hope you will soon have quieter times. Hugs, Valerie
ReplyDeleteThank you, Valerie. Things have settled down and are back to normal.
DeleteMe alegra saber que el techo ya lo tienes puesto. Deseo que te encuentres bien. Un abrazo.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Teresa.
DeleteNancy I'm glad everything is fixed. Here we also had a windstorm and as we are in autumn the streets woke up covered with leaves.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Norma. We still have thunderstorms but it is getting less. After this, we have to brace ourselves for extremely hot weather.
DeleteDear Lord, I'm so happy that you have your roof fixed. Was it a tornado that hit you? How are you feeling my friend especially after the problem dealing with the roof. Try to have a great day and rest.

I really don't know. Some said it is a whirlwind. Now that everything is fixed up, I can relax and sleep soundly.
DeleteGood to hear from you Nancy! Nice new roof 👍
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mun.
DeleteWhat an ordeal. Very expensive and so inconvenient. I am glad that you can relax now.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Gigi.
DeleteEvery 4-5 winters I also have problems with the roof, and have to hire a professional. Enjoy your new roof, Nancy!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Duta. Something which we don't look forward too.
DeleteWelcome back.
ReplyDeleteCoffee is on, and stay safe.
Thank you, Dora.

ReplyDeleteThank you, Citu.
DeleteLovely to see a post from you Nancy. Certainly not a nice thing to have happened. So glad all is fixed and you are happy with the finished result.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Margaret. Glad that all the stress is now behind us.
DeleteI'm glad you have a new roof over your dining room. Internet back is good. We've had interesting weather in Oregon this year. I wound up putting more potting soil on one of plants that looks like it's dying 😭. Soil has fertilizer and plant food in it. Hopefully it will help. Heavy wind is not good for plants in pots. Hope you're feeling better soon 💕, Becky
ReplyDeleteThank you, Becky. I am feeling much better and sleeping better too.
DeleteIt's good to know that your roof is fixed and the internet line is now connected.
ReplyDeleteThank you, PH.

DeleteSo good to hear you were finally able to get the roof fixed and your internet working again. I can only imagine how stressful all that was on you, so glad you all were not hurt during that storm.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Connie. Thank God I was not hurt.
DeleteI'm so glad your roof work is done! Storms can do so much damage, although you are right, when the Good Lord sends us a trial of some kind, He sends us the strength to get through it. Lots of prayers for you and your family!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mimi for your much appreciated prayers. God bless you and family.
DeleteThat reads like a horror story. Rain all the time, too?!
ReplyDeleteThat must´ve been very stressful indeed, glad it´s fixed now. Your green roof looks so beautiful
We love ground floor in a six-storey house.
But then... we live in a cold area. There seems to be no "perfect" place...
Thank you, Iris. Every place has it weak and strong points.
DeleteGood to have the roof fixed. I also feeling stress when house need to be fixed or repair.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Rose. Its a messy thing.
DeleteWhat a stressful ordeal! I'm glad to hear that the roof is now repaired and Internet restored.
