Mini Fish Balls & Otak-Otak In Farlim, Ipoh

This morning was a very busy one indeed! I had 2 appointments, 1 for breakfast date with one group of friends and another for lunch date with another group of friends.

For the morning breakfast there were 4 of us, we were all ex-colleagues.
One of us wanted to try the curry noodles at Restoran Blue Sky in Farlim but didn't know the way, so I showed the way.
A sample of the curry noodle that my friend wanted to try.
Since we were already in Farlim, I wanted to check out the lunch's place which none of our lunch group has been before. It was only a short distance away. I might as well go check out the area and also to see whether the stall is open for business or not.

This is the place, known for its mini sized fish balls and otak-otak imported from Muar, Johor.

It is a zinc shack surrounded by trees which keep the place cool.

This is a very old shack, it has been in business for many years. The place may not look nice, but it is clean. Some may not like to eat here. I noticed they still use charcoal stove besides the gas stove.

Since we were there, we might as well try the mini fish balls and otak-otak to see if it is worth for my friends to come all the way from the other side of town.

We didn't order any noodles. We just wanted to taste the fish balls and some of the fried goodies. The fish balls are about the size of a 5 cent or 10 cent coin. We ordered only 15 fish balls for MYR 3.00.
MYR 1.00 for 5 fish balls.
We also ordered 6 pieces of fried goodies. Don't know the price of these.
I was very interested to try the otak-otak, so ordered 4 pieces for us to try.
90 cents per piece.

Otak-otak is actually Nyonya fish custard wrapped in banana leaves. But this otak-otak imported from Muar, Johor is special. It is wrapped in palm leaves and grilled before it is served.

Upon opening the staples from both ends of palm leaves, here is the fish custard. It is a flat, thin piece of fish custard, very tasty and slightly spicy.

This is how they grilled the otak-otak.

This is a gas operated grilling stove.

I even bought 2 packets of frozen otak-otak home. One is Prawn otak-otak @ MYR 7.50. The other is Fish otak-otak @ MYR 7.00.

Before we left this place, I messaged my foodie friends that I have found the place and that they can come to taste the fish balls and otak-otak. So believe it or not, by midday, I was here again. The lady boss was happy to see me back with my friends!

For 5 of us, we ordered 3 bowls curry noodle and 1 plain soup noodle. Also the mini fish balls, some stuffed tofu and fried goodies too!

A few pieces of small friend goodies.

Ordered 10 pieces of otak-otak for 5 people. The otak-otak does not need any dipping sauce. These dipping sauce were for the fish balls, tofu and fried goodies.

1 ate only a few spoonful of noodles and some mini fish balls. The portions were not big and it was not a very heavy meal. Thank God for his providence, food and for friends!

If you are interested, the location is at Jalan Foo Wah Cheng, 30200 Ipoh (off Jalan Lahat).

You gave me life and showed me kindness,
and in Your providence watched over my spirit.

    1. Thank you, William. I too like the trees around the place and they help shade the place from the hot sun.

  6. 2 appointment in one day, that sounds interesting. Food looks good & I really want that bowl of curry noodles. I had once tasted otak otak from Muar Johor which my friend bought for me from her trip but am not too fond of it.

    1. Hi Irene, if on its own I won't mind eating this otak otak from Muar but I preferred the Penang style of otak otak, with the daun kaduk, etc fragrance.
