On Thursday night, our initial plan was to have fish head curry for dinner in Menglembu, Ipoh. Halfway through our journey, we passed by a restaurant and I pointed out to my friend and asked whether she had tasted the food there. She replied yes and that the food there is good.
Since it was threatening to rain and for the past few days there were thunderstorms, we made a u-turn reverse back to this restaurant.
Since it was a weekday and 8 pm in this area is almost past the peak dinner hours, the restaurant was not packed with customers.
We order a deep fried home made tofu with toppings of onions, deep fried dried shrimps and spring onions. The tofu is very smooth but the sauce is too salty.
Steamed fish pieces with ginger paste.
The fish was steamed just right and very tasty.
Asparagus stir fried with baby corn, carrots, capsicum, mushrooms, etc.
The above three dishes were our initial orders.
Then we added the deep fried pork rib with sticky sauce.
There were 5 long pieces of pork ribs.
Well marinated and favourful but have to use our hands to eat.
My lady friend insisted on paying the bill for this dinner for 4 people.
After our dinner while we were still sipping the Chinese tea, we noticed some people crowding around the fish tanks at one corner of the restaurant.
I went and peered over their shoulders to check what the attraction was.
I saw someone holding something like a ball in his palm.
Then hubby went closer and snapped a photo of that ball.
What do you see?
I saw a weird looking face, looked like an alien!
Then one of the staff took a net to scoop out a fish swimming in the tank.
It was a slow moving fish.
This is the back portion of the weird looking fish.
The side view of the fish. This is no ordinary fish. This is the puffer fish.
The restaurant has 3 puffer fishes just for show or for attraction only.
These 2 balls are puffed up puffer fishes. The puffer fish puffs up with water or air when it is threatened. Puffer fish is claimed to be the world's 2nd most poisonous vertebrate. It is highly toxic when eaten and has no antidote. But the meat of some species is considered a delicacy in Japan, Korea and even China. The chefs have to be specially trained to know which part is safe to eat.

Don't let the sparkle and the smooth taste of strong wine deceive you,
For in the end it bites like a poisonous serpent;
it stings like an adder.

The food looks really good except I would not eat Tofu because it is made with soy and soy is not good for me.
ReplyDeleteThose puffer fish are totally weird looking but so interesting.
Have a great week.
hugs,
JB
Thank you, Julia. Over here tofu is a very common dish but there are people who do not eat tofu. Have an interesting week!

Cruisin Paul
Thank you, Paul. I am not crazy enough to want to risk my life eating the puffer fish no matter how expert the chef may be. Have a fantastic week!
DeleteThe puffer fish is amazing. I love the look of the vegetables. :)
ReplyDeleteThank you, Linda. I am glad to have the chance to see what a real puffer fish looks like. Have a happy week!
DeleteThank you, De. Have a great week!
ReplyDeleteHello, I see some yummy looking meals. The pork ribs is one of my favorites. I did not know people eat the puffer fish? Thanks for sharing! Happy Monday, enjoy your new week!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Eileen. Pork rib is also one of my favourite. Over here we do not eat puffer fish and the restaurant here is keeping the puffer fish just to show the customers.
DeleteI like to eat steam ginger paste fish. Can hold the puffer fish like that? Is not toxic? I thought the puffer fish has pointed poisonous spines but maybe this species do not have.
ReplyDeleteThank you, Mun. The steam ginger paste fish here is very tasty. This puffer fish specie has no spines, the skin looks smooth. I didn't feel the fish and I do not know whether it is safe to touch with bare hands.
DeleteWhat a lovely meal you had. You do know how to eat well. I wish I could have been there too.
ReplyDeleteAs for the puffer fish. I think I'll pass on those.
Have a fabulous day Nancy. ☺
Thank you, Sandee. I too wouldn't want to risk my life eating the puffer fish. Have a fabulous day too.

ReplyDeleteThank you, KB. Have a beautiful day!
DeleteNancy, goodness those purple balls are actually puffer fish! I have never seen them before.
ReplyDeletePhong Hong, it was also my first time. Have a beautiful day!
DeleteEeeeee. It did look like a face. And I never seen a real life puffer fish. It does look like a ball once puffed up.
ReplyDeleteRose, I really thought it was a ball but when hubby took a closer picture, it showed the face!
DeleteEeee....I have never seen a puffer fish. It looks like it's about to explode..lol. I'm salivating over the ribs, Nancy! It looks very delicious.
ReplyDeleteSharon, yes the food there is delicious. Seeing the puffer fish was a bonus, first time I get to see this puffer fish!
DeleteVery interesting, this puffer fish! I was trying to figure out what the two 'plastic balls' on the surface of the water were! Someone provoked them to puff up?
ReplyDeleteThank you, Stacy. The restaurant staff must have provoked them to puff up because by the time I joined the group, he was lightly bouncing it in his palm. We managed to see the 3rd one which is not puffed up swimming in one corner of the tank and was scooped up for us to see the actual fish in the net.
DeleteSuch a selection!
ReplyDeleteThank you, Tom. Have a happy day!
DeleteHi Nancy, I am following you now too... thank you so much for dropping by my blog and leaving such a sweet comment xox
ReplyDeleteThe tofu I tried had no flavor, I think Canadians probably don't know how to season and cook it correctly... as for the puffer fish, that is interesting... I wouldn't want to eat it though xox
Thank you, Launna. The tofu is tasteless on its own and it depends on the gravy or sauce for its flavour. I too wouldn't want to eat the puffer fish..lol!
DeletePuffer fish do look quite unusual!
ReplyDeleteHello William, I also think it is unusual. Good thing I get to see it and took photos of the fish.
