Large Sunflowers In Cameron Highlands

This post is the continuation of our recent Cameron Highland trip. After we have checked out from the apartment, we made a last stop at the "Last Stop" garden before we proceed to drive all the way down to the lowland. There were many big sunflowers to welcome us. Sunflowers in front of the garden and sunflowers inside the garden. The sunflowers were really big!

Growing Sunflower From Seed.

My friend and I brought back some sunflower seeds from our holiday in Fraser's Hill in July, 2016. I germinated some seeds but the few seedlings were so thin and fragile. They kept growing in height but the stem remain thin.

 I transferred the seedlings into this big pot

 Only this seedling survived. It looked so weak, I planted it in a pot and placed it near the shade of the bougainvillea plant.

 I didn't give up on this plant and continue to fertilizer and water it.

 Slowly the plant began to grow stronger and taller. It reminds me of the giant bean stalk in the children's story book. I had to support it with 2 long iron rods.

 It grew to almost 8 feet tall before it bloomed for the first time! To snap the above photo of the flower, I had to stand on a wooden stool.

 And to get a closer picture, I had to stand on my toes and with the camera held high above my head!

 Here is my first sunflower bloom. It is standing tall, competing with the bougainvillea plant.

 It measured about 7 to 8 inches diameter from tip to tip of the yellow petals. 

This bright and striking sunflower standing tall at the end of my garden can be seen clearly from the front gate.

The plant is now almost reaching 9 feet tall!

Hurray! I can see more sunflowers blooming from the new branches.
I am glad I didn't underestimate or give up on a weakling.
With love, care and patience, my sunflower grew into a tall & fruitful plant!
