I first adopted this palm from my ex-colleague many years ago. This palm belonged to her mother and she wanted to give away some of the plants from her mother's garden. Her mom was getting old and too weak to care for the plants. When my ex-colleague brought the palm to my house, it was a bushy plant in a pot. The leaves were yellow and not healthy. And there was no more space in the pot for new shoots to grow.
The first thing I did was try to get the plant out from the pot but it just would not budge. I have no choice but to break the pot with a hammer. I wanted to separate the palm into two pots and it was not easy to do that. In the end, I have to use a machete (parang in Malay) and a hammer to cut the tough, hard root base in half. After much struggle and sweat, I managed to cut it into two. I planted the 2 halves in two separate bigger pots. These 2 pots are still with me and they are growing very well.
This palm has many names and some of the common names are Bamboo Palm, Golden Cane Palm, Yellow Palm and Butterfly Palm.
It is a tropical plant and it will give a natural tropical feel to your home or your garden. It is said to purify the air around it. It grows well in moist and rich soil with good drainage. I usually fertilize it once a month. And I water it once a day.
It needs light and warm to grow well. It can be planted outside, exposed to the sun but its leaves will be more yellow. Those palm that are placed away from direct sunlight will have greener leaves.
Yellow palm can be grown as ornamental palm both indoor as well as outside in the garden. It makes good indoor plant both in homes and offices. It can grow quite tall if grown in the ground. The leaves and the stem can be used for flower arrangement. It can be used also for craft work.
Leaves infested with white powdery substance.
The most common problem the palm faces is usually the white powdery substance found on the leaves. It usually started from the underside of the leaves and if not addressed, it will spread to other parts of the palm.
When I see this on the palm, I will give the palm a thorough bath by hosing the palm with water a few rounds. After that the white powdery substance will no longer be there. Or I can cut off those leaves with the powdery substance on them.
