I was looking through the Critter's folder to see what I can post and for joining Saturday's Critters and I found these photos which I have overlooked. These photos were taken at the Pet Fiesta held about 2 months ago. These are Hermit Crabs. At first glance, some of them looked like garden snails because of their shells but they are not. I googled for information on Hermit Crabs.
Hermit crabs live in large colonies and they are often found sleeping piled up together. They need their friends.
They live in the tropics and can live up to 30 years living in the wild. They need plenty of space to climb and move around.
They need lots of substrate to burrow, hide or bury themselves in for molting. They spend about 1 to 2 months underground molting and are not to be disturbed.
They need humidity and warm temperature.

Hermit crabs need an assortment of larger shells as homes for the crab's growth. If the shells were painted with toxic paints, the toxic will harm the crabs.
Most species of Hermit crabs have long and soft curved abdomens.
The vulnerable abdomen is protected from predators by a salvaged empty seashell carried by the hermit crab, into which its whole body can retract.
Hermit crabs housed in an assortment of temporary homes. As they grow, they change from smaller homes to bigger homes free of charge!
