Winter Melon & Pork Rib Soup

A friend gave me a small winter melon. I usually use winter melon to cook sweet drink (tong sui) and soup. I used two-third of the winter melon to cook sweet drink with dried longan and loh hon kor. For this sweet drink, I didn't add any sugar because the sweetness from the loh hon kor and longan is enough for us. The remaining one-third of the winter melon was used for boiling soup.

Peace Lily (spathiphyllum) from my garden.

Love the pure white colour of the petal.

This type of insect is attracted to the flower spadix.

Growing Peace Lily (Spathiphyllum) In My Garden

This plant has been in my garden for a few years. Peace Lily is its common name and its scientifc name is Spathiphyllum. The Peace Lily I have in my garden is just one of the many species of Peace Lily. Peace Lily is an evergreen plant and it grows well in warm climate. It is grown both as an indoor plant and garden plant. If grown as indoor plant, it needs to be exposed to bright light. If it is grown as garden plants, it needs to be in partial shade but not under the full sun.

This plant grows easily in normal garden soil. The soil must be moist and well drained. If the soil is too dry, the leaves will wilt and turn black if left too long without watering it. When the plant starts to wilt, it can easily be revived by watering it. Part of the leaves may turn black and need to be cut off.

Peace Lily plant serves as air purifier especially when placed in rooms or offices.

The leaves of Peace Lily plant is green and oval in shape. It can grow to about a foot long and 6 inches wide, supported by a long stalk which is about 10 inches long. The leaves are as shown in the pictures.

The flower "bud" is wrapped in green and it grows out from the middle of the plant on a long stalk. The flower or spathe is raised up above the leaves.

Then it will open to reveal the single white petal flower called spathe with a single finger-like column sticking upright called spadix. The spadix is beige to yellow in colour. The spathe can grow to about 3.5 to 4 inches long and the spadix is about 3 inches long.

The flowers or spathes are very long lasting. From pure white, it will slowly turn to light green and the spadix will also turn to light brown to dark green. If it is not cut off, it will remain until it totally dries up.

A flower or spathe that has turned from white to yellowish green or light green.

I feed my Peace Lily plant fertilizer about once a month or whenever I fertilize the other plants.

Caution: Peace Lily plant is toxic when consumed. The sap may cause skin irritation to some individuals.

The righteous will flourish like a palm tree,
