Lunch At Restoran J.J. Fatt, Lawan Kuda, Gopeng.

This was a Thursday and we had a lunch appointment with a long time friend, my ex-colleague and ex-housemate.

Morning sky at about 7:40am.
Our friend wanted to taste the food in Lawan Kuda, Gopeng and so we took her to this restaurant. This photo was taken few years ago when we were here for dinner. Lawan Kuda is known for snakehead fish dishes, so we ordered 1 fish. The restaurant will use the fish to cook 2 dishes.
Fish meat slices cooked with ginger slices, onions, and spring onion.
Soup using the bony parts of the fish, tofu and salted vegetable.
The soup was very flavourful.
Chinese kai lan vegetable sauteed with garlic and salt.
After having ordered the food, I took our friend out to the side of the restaurant to show her the vegetable garden. Most of the green vegetable served in the restaurant comes from this garden. After seeing the vegetables, my friend wanted to order another vegetable dish.
Water spinach with sambal belacan.
Total cost of lunch for 3 people = RM90.60
(incl. 3 small rice & warm water).
After our lunch, we went opposite where there is a roadside cendol stall. Usually the cendol will be sold out by 2pm but that day, it was still open at 2.30pm so my friend has the chance to enjoy this cendol ice.
This bowl of cendol ice consists of the green jelly made from rice flour, kidney beans, palm sugar syrup, coconut milk and shaved ice.

Photos credited to Shirley.
Photos taken by her and sent to me through whatsapp.
Have you seen a coconut shaped like a watermelon or a squash?
Have you seen these long papayas?
I have seen but have not tasted any.
Our friend found this bug on a mat in her house.
On a closer look, she saw that the bug was laying eggs on the mat.
Can you see the 4 eggs?
The back of the bug looks like a shield or a face mask.
With Google Lens, it was identified as the Brown Marmorated Stink.
If crushed, it will release a stinky smell.

We are pressed on every side by troubles, but not crushed and broken.
We are perplexed because we don't know why things happen as they do,
but we don't give up and quit.

Dinner On A Rainy Night

It rained last night on and off. This morning there was a light drizzle, so there was no morning walk.

Morning sky at 7:45am
~~~~~
Breakfast in our area.
I ordered pork with daikon soup noodle. It tastes something like beef  with daikon soup noodle, substituting beef with pork. No photo of hubby's breakfast, he ordered wan tan hor.
Cucumber plants in my garden.
~~~~~
Dinner in hubby's hometown Gopeng.
We went to one of the restaurants in Lawan Kuda.
There were six of us to a big table.
Fried pork belly slices with fried garlic with skin.
This was the second time we ordered this dish but it was not as good as the first time. Taste wise, it was okay but the pork belly slices were not crispy as before.
We ordered snakehead fish (san yu) and the meat slices used to cook "kam heong" style. From the above portion, I guessed the fish was not a big one.
The bony part of the fish cooked in herbal and rice wine soup.
Water spinach or kangkong cooked in shrimp paste. Of all the dishes, this was the only dish that was the right portion for 6 people
Deep fried squid.
This looks like a small portion for 2 or 3 people.
We have been here a few times and were never disappointed except this one time. It is obvious that prices of food have definitely increased.

For the Scriptures tell us that no one who believes in Christ
will ever be disappointed.

Early Dinner At Restoran J.J. Fatt, Lawan Kuda Baru, Gopeng

This was on the eve of the 2nd Movement Control Order (MCO 2.0, from 22nd Jan. to 4th Feb. 2021). We were walking home after morning walk plus breakfast and we passed by a house with the lady owner sweeping the outside area in front of her gate. Whenever we passed by, we will nod our heads (since we were wearing mask) and greet each other a "good morning".

We have noticed the above plant in front of her house and both hubby and I liked the variegated leaves. I just learned that this plant is the Blumei yellow and green coleus plant.
On this particular morning, as we greeted each other, hubby remarked that the above plant is very pretty. Quickly the lady asked whether we would like to have some cuttings. Instead of fresh cuttings, she gave us 3 propagated cuttings with roots growing in a plastic bag. According to her, it is very easy to grow this plant.
The 3 young plants are now doing well in their individual pot in my garden.

Since it was the eve of MCO, we still can dine-in in the restaurant with friends. Our friend suggested an early dinner in Restoran J.J. Fatt, Lawan Kuda, Gopeng. We can avoid the after work traffic congestion and at the same time, we can drive back before it gets dark.
We haven't been to this restaurant after our last visit here in early July last year. So about 7 months we saw that the restaurant has taken over the piece of land next to it to grow their own vegetables.
You can see neat rows of vegetables and I couldn't resist taking a few snapshots. There are green and red amaranth, spring onions, Chinese kai lan, choy sum, siew pak choy, chilies, and etc.
~~~~~
Since it was only 5:35pm, there were only 3 other tables that were ahead of us. We had the whole restaurant to ourselves after the earlier customers left. The restaurants here are famous for using a Snakehead fish to cooked 2 dishes. Snakehead fish is a fresh water fish (from fish family Channidae). This fish can breathe air with its gills which enables it to migrate short distances over land. The local Chinese refer to this fish as "san yu" in Cantonese.
We ordered the following dishes for 4 people
The meaty part of the Snakehead fish cut into slices and used to cook "kung pao" style, using dried chilies, big onions, spring onions, and various sauces. Nice, tasty and tender fish meat.
After the meaty part has been removed, the rest of the fish will be fried and used to cook soup consisting of Chinese dried medicinal herbs and glutinous rice wine. This soup is very delicious and flavourful. For those who do not like herbs or wine, they can request for other ways of cooking the soup.
This is a new dish which was recommended to us. It is a dish consisting of fried pork belly and fried garlic with skin on. It has a tinge of sweetness in taste and we even finished all the fried whole garlic cloves leaving the skin behind.
Home grown baby choy sum sauteed with garlic and salt.
Total cost of dinner RM70.30 including 4 small portion of rice and plain water.
The following are sunset photos taken from a moving car travelling back to Ipoh.
#2, 6:55pm
#3
#4, taken from a flyover, 7:20pm
Same as above.
After sending our friends home, we bade goodnight to them and we drove home. Hopefully, within these 2 weeks, we will see a decline in the number of infected cases.
To everyone: Take care, stay home, stay safe and healthy.
Without wise leadership, a nation is in trouble;
but with good counselors there is safety.
Lunch At Restoran J.J. Fatt, Lawan Kuda, Gopeng
I woke up at about 2 am in the morning. Went to the washroom and then went back to sleep. Woke up again at about 3:30 am and was wide awake. Switched on the computer, read the emails and prepared the day's blog post.
Hubby got up at about 5:45 am and by 6:10 am, we started out on our early morning walk. We walked to the park, did 2 rounds of walking at the park, and then we walked to our regular coffee shop. We had our cup of coffee, chit chatted with our friend and then walked back home.
 Reached home at about 7:30 am.
~~~~~
Breakfast at home
I warmed up the remaining yam rice from the previous day's dinner.
 The yam rice tasted just as good as the previous day.
 I added lime juice to the sambal belacan.
Yam rice + sambal belacan = super delicious breakfast.
 These colourful blooms are from the same hibiscus bougainvillea plant.
 Cloudy sky at 9:05 am

Lunch with friends at Restoran J.J. Fatt, Lawan Kuda, Gopeng.
This is our first lunch outside of Ipoh since MCO was implemented.
 Stir fried paku pakis (fern) with sambal belacan.
 Fish slices (san yu or snakehead fish) with ginger slices and spring onions.
 After the meaty part has been removed, the rest of the fish used for boiling soup with wine added.
 Fresh oyster and egg omelette.
We ordered 1 plate of white rice to be shared by 2 people.
No rice for me and another friend.
~~~~~
After lunch, we drove over to Kedai Kopi Gemuk in Kopisan, a short distance from where we had lunch.
 2 cups of unsweetened coffee, 2 glasses of chilled barley + lemon drink and steamed glutinous rice with kaya (coconut jam).
~~~~~
After lunch, we went shopping at Parkson, Ipoh Parade. When we reached home, I was tired and sleepy. Took a nap till about 7 pm. Woke up to prepare dinner.
The day before, a friend gave us 2 garlic bread and
 a roast chicken (ayam golek Mak Kiah)
 The garlic bread smelled so good even after being in the fridge.
 I couldn't resist. Took a piece to eat.
Cream was applied in between the cut bread.
 The chicken was cut into 2 parts before re-heating in the oven.
Hubby and I ate the 2 chicken legs and 2 wings.
The rest of the chicken meat was shredded and kept in the fridge for future use.

We are all parts of one body, we have the same Spirit,
and we have all been called to the same glorious future.
For us there is only one Lord, one faith, one baptism,
and we all have the same God and Father who is over us all
and in us all, and living through every part of us.
