Yam Rice & Peppery Soup, Durians & Mangosteen

Hubby knows I love yam rice. On this particular Wednesday, he took me to this food court called Pusat Makanan Enam Enam in Bercham.

The stall selling the yam rice is inside the food court.

I picked some fish and meat balls to be cooked in pepper soup. I also ordered a bowl of yam rice.

You can choose from the many varieties available.

There are many pieces of yam and other ingredients in the rice.

Hubby also ordered a bowl of yam rice.

For the soup, he picked pork belly, stomach and intestine to be cooked in pepper soup. They also have plain clear soup if you don't want the pepper soup. You can also pick vegetables for the soup.

I ordered a small plate of vegetable acar from the roast meat rice stall.

After lunch, we went to buy durians. I don't know the place or the name of the shop. All I know is that there were baskets full of durians placed in front of the 2 shops. The durians were sold at RM5, RM8, RM10 and onwards per kilo. This was about 3 weeks ago. That day, we bought around RM50 worth of durians. 

Upon reaching home, we opened all the durians. We ate all we want and packed the rest in containers to be place in the freezer to be enjoyed later. The chilled durians taste like durian ice creams.

I also bought about 3 kilos of mangosteens at RM7 per kilo.

Mangosteen is one of my favourite fruits. Mangosteen is a seasonal fruit and we only get to enjoy it once or twice a year at the same time as the durian season. Unfortunately, mangosteen is no longer a cheap fruit.

The fruit is white, soft and taste sweet. Inside the white flesh is a seed. Be careful not to get the stain from the skin onto your clothing. Not easy to remove the stubborn stain.

Curry Noodle, Rolled Noodle, Pig's Stomach Soup

It looks like the rainy season is back. The weather is cooler now due to the heavy downpour but it also causes floods in the northern states. Recent report stated that 3 lives were lost and 3 more missing in the floods.

We waited till 7:15am for the drizzling to stop before setting out on our morning walk.

We had clouding sky the whole day.

This is the first time since the full lockdown we ventured out to buy our favourite curry noodle in town. We love the thick creamy and tasty curry gravy. After buying the curry noodles, we stopped at the nearby market to buy some local fruits.

We bought 1 kilo of dokong for RM6.

Mangosteen was selling for RM4 per kilo, so I bought 4 kilos.

For lunch, hubby bought steamed rolled noodle with yam bean filling with curry gravy. He added fish balls and fish cake. My lunch consisted of little bits of this and that, just to clear the almost empty containers, have them washed and kept away.

For dinner, I boiled pig's stomach soup with raw ginkgo nuts, white peppercorns and onions. It was a no rice dinner, so we had 1 egg in each bowl. Actually, I wanted to use the last 2 eggs from the old stock before I buy more eggs to keep in the fridge.

Mangosteen & Take Away Dinner

We detoured and walked over to where the shops are to buy breakfast.

Hubby bought nasi lemak and 2 hum chim peang.

I wanted to eat crackers with orange + ginger jam.

Mangosteen is one of my favourite fruits. I bought these for RM4 per kilo. Some places are now selling RM5 to RM6 per kilo.

 Mangosteen is claimed to have cooling effect and helps to cool down our body heat especially after consuming lots of durians.

We love this sweet, sourish juicy white pulp.

There were actually 2 and they were cooing to each other.

The weather was hot and humid and I went into lazy mode.

Hubby went out to buy take away food.

He chose 3 types of dishes: Fried black pomfret, sweet sour mustard green and stinky beans with minced pork.

He also bought 2 portion of rice.

Local Fruits, Home Grown Chives & Home Cooked Dinner

These days, we try to start our morning walk early. Being early encourages us to walk more because the air is cooler and there will be less people using the walking path.

The durian season is almost coming to an end.

It is time to enjoy other local fruits that are in season.

 These are dokong, scientific name is Lansium domesticum. Underneath the skin, the translucent fruit is in segments. It is sweet and sourish. It is now selling at about 3 kilos for RM 10.

 These are mangosteen, scientific name Garcinia mangostana. Underneath the thick skin is the white fruit in segments. It has a sweet sourish taste. I bought these at 1 kilo for RM 4.

 These are seasonal fruits, usually only once or twice in a year.

I have 2 pots of chives growing in my garden.  A friend gave me the 1st pot. The chives in the 2nd pot was grown from seeds which I bought from the nursery.

 Harvested the above from my garden to cook for dinner.

One thing I like about growing chives is that, after harvesting the chives, it will grow back again as long as I didn't uproot them.

 Pan fried pork tenderloin slices pre-marinated with black pepper sauce.

 Blanched chives and pan fried purple brinjals (eggplants).

Garnished with garlic oil and soy sauce & oyster sauce.

Our home cooked dinner for 2 people.

We finished the left over curry beef and kept some remaining pork slices.

The pork slices make good sandwiches for our lunch.

Mangosteen Fruits Is In Season.

Durian is my favourite seasonal fruit. And after durian, mangosteen will be next in line. Mangosteen is another seasonal fruit. Durian and mangosteen go hand in hand. Durian is considered a "heaty" fruit, while mangosteen is suppose to "cool" down the body heat. So after eating durians, it is recommended to eat some mangosteens.

This year, there is an abundance of durians and mangosteens. I bought a few rounds of mangosteen and each round of about 3 kilos or more.

As you can see, the skin is thick and takes up most of the weight. For the sake of photographs, I used a knife to cut the skin.

Otherwise, I will just use both palms to press open the mangosteen, as you can see those uneven broken skin on the right side (above picture).

The flesh is white and juicy. It is sweet with a slight sourish taste.

The number of fruit segments are revealed at the bottom of the fruit. The above picture shows 5 segments, and there are really 5 segments of white flesh inside.

The smaller segments will have little tiny soft seeds but the bigger ones will have bigger seeds which can be spit out.
