Roast Pork & Spring Onions

The New Year 2021 started with lots of rain. It has been raining almost everyday. There were days of non-stop heavy downpour and some days with light showers and gray skies. It was both scary and sad to see videos of natural disasters such as landslides, bridges being washed away, and serious floods in many parts of the country. Even the plants in my garden have been affected by the excessive rainfall.

Even before it could ripen, some of the figs burst opened because they were getting too much water from the rain.

Our friends came over to give us 2 slices from a birthday cake (chocolate tiramisu cake).

I had a slice of cake and some guava pickle for lunch while hubby went out for his lunch.

Hubby came back from his lunch with the above roast pork. A friend met him at the coffee shop where he was having lunch and she blessed us with the roast pork. I ate a few pieces and kept the rest for dinner.

Home cooked dinner.

Stir fried roast pork with sesame oil, garlic, ginger, soy sauce, and spring onion.

Blanched green vegetable (baby choy sum) and drizzled with garlic oil and soy sauce.

Cooked 2 bricks of dried noodles, mixed with garlic oil, light and dark soy sauce.

Simple home cooked dinner for 2 people on a cold, rainy day.

For the past few nights and early mornings, the temperature was about 22 to 23 deg C and it felt like we were up in the highlands. We slept without having to use the fan, just nice with the cool fresh air coming in through the open windows.

By wisdom the LORD founded the earth;

Home Grown Spring Onions & Home Cooked Dishes

Sometimes I forget what I have bought and what I have placed in the refrigerator. One day I found 2 packets of onions in the fridge.

 There were roots and shoots growing out of the onions.

I planted all the onions in my garden.

And some in this pot.

Time to harvest these spring onions.

This is the first batch I harvested.

Below were some of the ways I used the spring onions for my cooking.

#1 - Steamed balls with spring onions

(fish paste, minced meat, minced prawns & spring onions)

15 steamed balls and 1 green veggie for our dinner.

#2 - Steamed eggs with spring onions and sprinkling of garlic oil.

#3 - Steamed white eggplants or brinjals & spring onions.

Topped with sprinkling of oyster sauce & garlic oil.

#4 - Steamed sweet sour pork ribs & sprinkling of spring onions.

#5 - And for the remaining spring onions, I lightly blanched them and add some sprinkling of light soy sauce & garlic onion.

That morning, I also harvested some papayas.  Half ripe one I kept and waited for it to ripen. The green ones are good for boiling soup. I kept one for myself and gave the rest away.

Growing Onions, Spring Onions From Seeds

How wonderful it is to harvest our own spring onions and onions from our own garden. I had this pleasure and even though the harvest was not a big one, I was very pleased and encouraged with the achievement. This picture showed the last half of the spring onion and onion harvest. I also get to harvest a small cabbage from the smallest plant. I didn't take any picture of the earlier harvest. These were all grown in a small round pot.

These spring onions and onions were grown from seeds I collected from my garden which I have shared previously. You can click here to read the post if you are interested.

 I have left a few spring onion plants to flower and waited to see if these will produce seeds.

The seed pods finally dried up and I collected these seeds. I sprinkled the seeds onto a round flower pot. and covered the seeds with about 0.5 inch of garden soil.

After some time, tiny fragile seedlings appeared. These were grown from seeds.

The seedlings look fragile and I thought they might not survive.

This is a 1 foot diameter pot and the depth is only about 5 inches.

It was more of curiosity and experiment. I was not expecting much but it was interesting to see the seedlings grow.

I regretted not feeding these seedlings much fertilizers. They might have been more healthy if I have fertilized them more frequently. I hope the next project will yield better and healthier harvest.

These might have been bigger if I have given more attention to the plants. Hope to do better in the future as I continue to learn through my experience.

 I saw this lone bird/pigeon. It didn't fly away when I walked past.

 It seemed lost. There was no other similar bird nearby.

 It has almost all white feathers with light brown specks.

 It has red claws.

I hope it will not be lost for long and will find its way back to the others.

Flowers And Seeds Of Spring Onions.

Since I took up gardening, I have learned many amazing things. I get to see the plants bud, and the buds turning to flowers. I get to see how the flowers look like and then the flowers turning to seeds. And then I am able to use the seeds to grow new plants again. My most recent excitement was from my spring onion plants.

It all started when I found 2 big onion bulbs with green shoots sprouting out. I planted these 2 bulbs in a shallow pot in my garden. I intended to use the spring onions for cooking purposes but I never get to harvest and use the spring onions.

 The spring onions from the 2 big onions started to bud. I have seen these little buds of some of the spring onions we bought from the market. The buds were enclosed with a translucent membrane.

 I didn't harvest the spring onions and left them in the pot to grow. One day the little buds broke free from the translucent membrane.

 Everyday I get to see nature at work

 Then the little buds opened into little pretty flowers.

 These flowers may not be bright or striking but they are pretty.

This cluster of tiny flowers grow on the tip of the flower stalk.

 After the flowers started to dry up, I thought to myself that these must be the seed pods. It turned out that my guess was correct. 

 I waited till the seed pods started to reveal the black seeds inside.

Before the seeds are lost, I quickly collected them and these are the tiny black seeds of the spring onions. I intended to germinate these seeds soon and then wait to see what happens. I hope to update you soon in the near future.
