Breakfast On The First Day Of Chinese New Year 2015

We woke up late on the first morning of Chinese New Year. Our sons wanted to sleep late so we didn't wake them up. Hubby and I went out looking for breakfast in our area and found that most of the shops were closed. We came to this coffee shop, Kedai Kopi Sin Choi Yuen, First Garden, Ipoh and saw that it was opened for business. Surprisingly, we found that the place was not as packed as the previous years. This time we could easily get a table to ourselves.

As I walked in, I passed by a few tables and I saw that quite a number of the customers ordered curry noodle. I have not tried this curry noodle, so this morning I decided to give it a try. I was told that it was curry without coconut milk.
The curry soup without coconut milk. Lime juice in the spoon.
Total cost MYR 5 (approx 1.37 USD)

I poured the lime juice into the curry and brought up the ingredients to the surface. Curry soup with flat rice noodle, prawns, chicken meat, bbq pork, bean sprouts and mint leaves. I quite like this curry without coconut milk.

Hubby's fried flat rice noodle with prawns, egg and bean sprout. This noodle came much later, even after I have finished my bowl of curry noodle. The cook was frying non-stop to meet the orders. This morning, I noticed that the plate was not lined with banana leaf. Cost MYR 3.50 (approx. 0.96 USD).

Whenever we order hot black coffee, we will want to eat Chinese crullers (yau char kwai) with our coffee. Selling at MYR 0.80 per piece (approx. 0.22 USD).

1 piece of Chinese cruller (yau char kwai) and 1 piece of "mah keok" (horse foot - literal translation). The long one is the Chinese cruller and the short one with sesame seeds if the horse foot. The main ingredient is flour. Cost for 2 pieces MYR 1.60 (approx. 0.44 USD).

Since I have finished my curry noodle much earlier and waiting for hubby to finish his fried noodle, I took some snapshots from where I was seated. On the left is the Chinese cruller stall, on the right is the wanton noodle stall.
On the left is the curry noodle stall and on the right is the fried noodle stall.
The 2 pictures below were taken from our previous breakfast on an earlier date.

On normal days, the fried noodle will be placed on a banana leaf lined plate.

This is Hong Kong Chee Cheong Fun. Ingredients - steamed flour rolls with diced bbq pork and prawns filling, served with spicy dried shrimp belacan paste. I can remember the price. The stall was not opened today.

Because of the LORD's great love we are not consumed,
for His compassions never fail.
They are new every morning; great is your faithfulness.

  3. This coffee shop is really diligent to be still open for business on CNY day 1. I think almost all chinese eateries here are closed on this day. How come the price of the fried noodle and curry mee is so far apart - RM3.5 and RM5? Here the noodles are RM5.5 to RM6. Can't get any below RM 5 already.

    1. Over here we still can find places selling noodles less than RM5. Some are highly priced. I guess the bowl of curry noodle have more ingredients - bbq pork, chicken meat and prawns. This is a new stall, will see if the price remains same after CNY.

  4. Do they charge higher price during the CNY period? Over here, the 1st few days of CNY, if the stall is open, the price is higher a bit than normal days...

  6. Thank you for your nice comment on my memories photos.
I am sorry you not even have any pictures of your parents...
My grandparents and parents used to took many pictures and I have an album full of old photos. I have been digitizing almost all them. Really they are a source of memories.
    Hugs.
