Baked Cassava Or Tapioca Cake (Ubi Bingka)

Another day with overcast sky. 

The sunrise is partially veiled. Snapshot taken at 8am.

I received a text message with the above snapshot informing me that my friend had harvested his cassava roots and wanted to give me some.

Hubby and I drove over to his house to collect our share of cassava roots. I peeled off the skin and cleaned the roots to make baked cassava cake (ubi bingka).

From 1.5 kg of cassava root, I can make 1 big and 1 small trays of cassava cake. This time the cake looked pale. I should have leave it in the oven to bake longer to get a more golden colour.

The cassava cake or ubi bingka was cut, placed in various tubs and distributed to friends and neighbour. I kept back 1 tub for hubby and myself.

While the cassava cake was baking in the oven, I made myself a cup of Nescafe and took out half a piece of chilled no-bake cheesecake for my lunch.

Hubby came back from town with takeaway snacks. He bought 2 baked buns (Seremban siew pau) and kaya puffs (below)

Savoury glutinous rice, baked snacks, & Claypot Chicken Rice

We couldn't go for morning walk because it was raining when we woke up. We waited for the rain to stop and we drove out to Kedai Kopi Sun Yuan Loong for breakfast. The last time I was here was with my ex-colleagues and friends, and that seems like a long time ago.

Sunrise at 6:55 am.

I ordered my favourite item - glutinous rice.

3 types of glutinous rice: yellow, white & brown with toppings of bbq pork, roast pork, peanuts, sweet grated coconut, and specially served with chicken curry and sambal. The lady boss very accommodating, you can request whatever toppings you want. The cost is less than RM6.

This place is known for their white coffee.

On the way home, we stopped to buy some baked snacks.

4 siew paus (baked buns) and 5 kaya puffs.

Meet Up With Friends At Vintage Coffee & Bread, Ipoh

We met up with friends at about 12:40 pm at Vintage Coffee & Bread, Jalan Theatre in Ipoh new town. Our friends reached earlier and they got a table for 4 people.

2 coffee, 1 iced honey lemon tea & 1 hot honey lemon tea.

Our friends ordered the sponge cake and some puffs to share. Sorry, we only remembered to take photos after we started to eat.

Sponge cake with kaya or coconut egg jam, very nice and fragrant.

We cut the sardine puff & taro puff into small portions to taste.

We already had our lunch before meeting up with our friends.

Can you see the red arrow pointing to the gold tin in the middle of the above picture? My father-in-law's shop has the same type of tin that is attached to a pulley. The tin is used for keeping money earned from items sold.

Breakfast At Ipoh Food Court, Jalan Lahat

Our friend came to know of a newly opened food court near our area and she suggested that we should go to check out this place. Come Saturday morning, we were taken to this food court. We were early, so no need to worry about the place being over crowded or observing physical distancing. There was a man seated at the table to make sure everyone adheres to the SOP requirement before entering the premise. We chose a table big enough to accommodate 4 people.

This is my breakfast. Spicy Chili Pan Mee or spicy handmade noodle with a cup of unsweetened coffee with evaporated milk. The noodle sure looks good, hope the taste is good too.

This spicy chili pan mee is served dry. There is a half-boiled egg, minced pork with chopped mushroom, crispy fried anchovies, green veggie, spicy chili sauce and chili sambal served separately. I am very satisfied with this bowl of noodle.

Hubby ordered a plate of Mee Jawa from the Malay stall.

This is quite good too.

Hubby also ordered some prawn fritters with peanut sauce for sharing.

I bought 2 kaya puffs to keep for lunch. Crispy pastry skin with lots of kaya inside.

Back home in my garden, I harvested 3 long okras.

My beige multi layer petals hibiscus blooming again. I noticed that it has different shades of beige and white on its petals.

Lunch At Vintage Coffee & Bread

Last Friday morning, my friends and I visited a old friend who have moved into a home for the elderly. We spent some time chatting and encouraging this friend and left when it was time for them to have their lunch. We hope he will feel much better and we will be back to visit him soon.

 From the home, we drove back to town for lunch. When we entered the cafe, there was only a couple taking their lunch there. After ordering our food, it was time for me to enjoy and to take snapshots of the decorations in the cafe. 

 This is a traditional water boiler for making tea and coffee, which is found in most Chinese coffee shops. Some traditional coffee shops are still using this water boiler.

 This boiler is now on display as a decoration. Even the pink potty is used as an umbrella holder (the one holding the red umbrella).

 Here I got to taste the traditional Hainanese coffee served together with one of the lunch set we ordered. On the shelf above, are fresh Chinese white bread kept in the plastic bags. Sorry, not for sale.

 A typewriter, some miniature beer bottles, a hot water flask (red) and a tapioca smoking pipe, etc.

For 3 people, we ordered the following items to share.

 1st set - All Day Breakfast with a cup of hot coffee @ RM 13.

This set consists of a long sausage, 2 pieces of ham, an egg, toast, a piece of butter, tomato and cucumber slices, and 3 small pieces of watermelon. My friends do not drink coffee, so I had the coffee.

 2nd set - Signature Hainan Chicken Chop @ RM 17.90

It was served with some toast, cucumber slices, cherry tomatoes, a bowl of ABC soup, and a glass of drink (my friend chose barley).

The 3rd friend ordered an orange juice at RM 4.50

 Add on #1 - 1 chicken pie @ RM 5.50

 Add on #2 - a kaya (coconut & egg jam) puff @ RM 1.20

 Add on #3 - a crispy durian cream puff @ RM 5.50

Add on #4 - 1 set of toast with butter & kaya @ RM2.50 (no photo)

A glass of plain water @ RM 1.00

We also bought and took away 3 small tubs of kaya jam @ RM22.50

and 6 pieces of kaya puff @ RM 7.20

 Half way through our lunch, all the tables were occupied.
